Mastroberardino Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio Rosso 1997 - Italy |
CLUB: S / RO
| Lacryma Christi, "tears of Christ", is the Mastroberardino vineyard's flagship wine and soon you'll see why. It's made from 100% Piedirosso, grown in the volcanic soil near Mount Vesuvius resulting in a dark, ruby wine we found to be both distinctively smooth and full-bodied. You'll note that this wine exhibits the rich flavor and scent of plum, black cherry, spice, and woodlands, all encased in plush, soft, tannins. Requiring specially designed fermentation equipment and presses for their Lacryma Christi, the vineyard has crafted a highly extracted, complex offering absent of any harsh tannic tones. Aging for 6 months in oak barrels has certainly added an additional layer of complexity rare in Italy's southern wines. We found it perfect for immediate consumption. | |||

Torreon Sauvignon Blanc 2000 - Chile |
CLUB: S / WO
| Torreon de Paredes' 2000 Sauvignon Blanc acts and appears as a good white Bordeaux. Resembling a fine Entre Deux Mers, this lively, fresh, Sauvignon Blanc wears a pale yellow robe with a slight hint of green. Tropical fruits: guava, grapefruit, and pineapple, combine with slight floral and herbal tones in a complex and appealing bouquet. Herbs, grass, and tropical fruits overlay a crisp acidity in the mouth, giving this delightful wine its healthy balance, the very characteristic often lacking in other Chilean white wines. We weren't surprised when several tasters picked this Sauvignon Blanc as a white Bordeaux, most likely due to its cepage of 20% Semillon and 80% Sauvignon Blanc and its lively acidity. We'd suggest serving it well chilled. | |||

Torres Gran Sangre De Toro 1997 - Spain |
CLUB: RO
| The Torres' 1997 Gran Sangre de Toro is a blend of 25% Carinena that has been aged in small oak barrels for one year and 75% Garnacha. This limited bottling of Sangre de Toro (bull's blood), showcases an intense, deep, ruby robe with mahogany highlights. We found the nose quite elegant, offering scents of cherry, blackberry, over a background of black pepper, clove and underlying hints of singed oak. Look for a big and sensual palate, presenting round tannins that reveal the wine's fruits as it airs. We'd suggest enjoying it at cool room temperatures after airing for a half hour. | |||

Mastroberardino Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio Bianco 1998 - Italy |
CLUB: WO
| Crafted exclusively from the historic Coda de Volpe varietal (to mean tail of the fox - a name given by Pliny the Elder after the shape of the grape clusters), Mastroberardino's 1998 Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio Bianco is fruit-filled, spicy, offering great depth. We found it medium-bodied with a nose hinting flavors of liquid minerals, honey, and piecrust. It's been likened to an exquisite dry Riesling with the taste of Mediterranean sun at its soul. You'll note it to be extremely well made, exhibiting intrigue as well as charm from its delicate, pale yellow robe all the way through to its lingering, classy finish. | |||
